The 17th Annual Meeting of Association of the History of Chinese Economic Thought Held in Shenzhen

On November 19, 2016, the 17th Annual Meeting of the Association of the History of Chinese Economic Thought (AHCET) was held in Shenzhen University (SZU). The meeting was co-sponsored by the AHCET and the SZU and organized jointly by the School of Economics of SZU and the China Center for Special Economic Zone Research (CCSEZR) 鈥 a key research institute of humanities and social science of the Ministry of Education of China. Attendees at the annual academic meeting included over 100 experts and scholars from prestigious universities and journal publishers at home and abroad such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Journal of Wuhan University, Journal of Shenzhen University and the Books and Newspapers Data Center of Renmin University of China.


The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Tao Yitao, vice secretary of CPC Committee of SZU, secretary of the Discipline Inspection Commission of SZU and director of the CCSEZR. Prof. Li Qingquan, president of SZU, delivered a welcome speech at the opening ceremony. He introduced SZU's development course, distinctness and contribution to society and sketched the proactive researches conducted by some scientific research institutions of SZU in the fields of the history of China's reform and opening-up thought and the history of special economic zones (SEZs). Prof. Tang Renwu, president of the AHCET from Beijing Normal University summarized the achievements of the AHCET in the past two years.


The experts and scholars delivered speeches and had discussions on subjects including the economic history research methods, ancient economic thought, modern economic theory and the "Belt and Road" construction. Among the wonderful speeches are "'No Predetermined Methods for Historical Researches' and Scientific Development" by Prof. Ye Tan from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, "Modern Economic Theory and Dream Pursuing Theory of China" by Prof. Wang Yiwu from Hainan University, "Cultural and Institutional Restrictions on the Implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative" by Prof. Tao Yitao from SZU, "Sinicization of the Buddhist Temple Loan System in the Middle Ancient Society" by Prof. Zhou Jianbo from Peking University, "Adam Smith's View about China and Its Enlightenment" by Prof. Ma Tao from Fudan University, "Regional Economic Thought of President Xi Jinping and Its Practical Influence" by Prof. Wu Chuanqing from Wuhan University, "Transformation of Economic Growth Ideas of the New China: An Analysis Framework" by Prof. Cheng Lin from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and "Thought on the Economic Reform of Taiwan in Last Century from the Perspective of Historical Materialism" by associate professor Zhang Yue from Beijing Normal University.


Academic discussions were followed by the new leadership election. Prof. Zou Jinwen, vice president of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL), was elected as the new president of the AHCET, Prof. Tao Yitao, director of the CCSEZR, was re-elected as the standing vice president, and Prof. Zhong Ruoyu, assistant to the director of the CCSEZR, was elected to the council.


The closing ceremony was presided over by Prof. Chen Yong, dean of the School of Economics of SZU. Prof. Zou Jinwen, the new president of the AHCET and vice president of ZUEL said the AHCET would be driven to develop into an academic exchange and talent fostering platform. Prof. Tao Yitao, vice secretary of CPC Committee of SZU and pace-setter in theoretical economics, said in her closing keynote address that the purpose of historical studies is to serve the present and how far a nation can go depends on how much it has learned from the past. We explore the history of ancient Chinese economic thought in order to learn from our ancestors and optimize the socialist market economic theory with Chinese characteristics. At last, renowned domestic experts and scholars in the field of the history of Chinese economic thought spoke highly of the unique research field of the CCSEZR and its academic achievements with considerable domestic and international influence.

Associate professor Zhang Yue from Beijing Normal University delivers a speech themed "Thought on the Economic Reform of Taiwan in Last Century from the Perspective of Historical Materialism".
